Fuel problems

Hi,

I drive a chrysler voyager registered in 2001. Recently I have run-out of Deisel twice yet the digital read out had said that I have over 30 miles left in the tank. In the past I have relied on this and have even run the car on 0 miles as I pull onto a garage forecort. Can you help? I feel unable to trust the read out now.

Sorry if this sounds like a sermon but you should never rely on a fuel gauge to give an accurate reading, as you should have realised the first time you ran out of fuel.

It is also false economy to allow the fuel tank to become so empty. This allows all the 'muck' which accumulates in the tank to be sucked into the fuel line which can lead to unnecessary (and even hefty) repair bills.

I have yet to see a car where the fuel is drawn from anywhere but the bottom of the tank. I think the idea of muck in the tank just doesn;t happen today.

Nev01, ignore the gauge, if you know it's inaccurate, just add 30 miles to what it says.

I didn't say the contaminant would necessarily be in the bottom of the tank.

As for Andy thinking that water contamination, the formation of asphaltene compounds or even 'diesel bug' just doesn't happen today, that is his prerogative, however he won't be paying your repair bills.

The choice is yours.
