Heating Oil And Boiler

Like an idiot, I ran out of heating oil on Sunday.

It was meant to be delivered today. I wasnt here this morning. They often leave a delivery note poking through the door but it could have blown away. Now I could go and check the tank, but this means battling through the undergrowth and poking a long stick in the top (the guage doesnt work) and its raining. Or I could just turn the boiler on and see what happens.

Two questions:-

If there is no oil and I turn the boiler on, will it do any damage?
Do I need to do anything with the boiler - I have never run out of oil before. How does it know there is oil in the tank?

Yours shiveringly........

Some of them have a little manual pump which you have to press (many times) to get the new oil supply to come thru.

I'm moving out in 2 months Zacs!
Ah. OK.
Althogh you now have oil in the tank there will be none at the boiler, it will need bleeding as Zac says.

its a Grant Multipass Combi.
You don't always need to bleed after delivery, is there an ignition buttn on the side or front of the boiler - normally a large soft button?
Turn the heating on and listen for the boiler starting up - then press the button and see if it fires up.
Islay, she ran out so it will need bleeding.
It takes 2-3 hours for oil to be syphoned. It only "drips" in. Stop pushing button until this time is up. Hopefully you won't need any bleeding.
Hopkirk I frequent have run out of oil and not had to bleed the system

DIdnt need bleeding. Just needed shut off button pressing to restart it. So I discovered. It is working now. :)

Thank you all.
