Remember as a 10 year old, climbing out of my bedroom window, up the wide drain pipe from the bathroom onto a flat roof. I then walked around the edge of the roof to clamber down another short pipe and a fence into next door's garden.
Now am petrified of heights. Never fell as a child. Why?

Probably developed an imagination.

No, feel frightened trying to change a light bulb. Have never broken a bone.
Because, as children, we are inconsequential. We do not have a fully developed ability to appreciate or foresee the risks and consequences of our actions. We need adults, who have, to protect us, and we, being children,then do dangerous things when adults can't see us
