After looking on the internet I have managed to get my gas fire working again but the previous owners left no manual for the fire so my question is.

On the wall beside the fire there is a switch which looks like an ordinary electrical switch which ignites the fire. Does this switch have to be left on the whole time the fire is running.

Hi maggie, I'm glad you've managed to get it lit. What make of fire is it, as this may help? I'm no expert on gas fires but it seems strange that there's a mains switch for a gas fire.
Does seem strange to have a mains switch to a Gas Fire??
You say it ignites the fire, usually an ingnition switch is depressed to light the fire and released once lit? But this shouldnt take the form of a mains switch on an adjacent wall. The most important thing is making sure that gas is not being released when the fire is not in use, but this switch shouldnt be linked up to the gas supply. If in doubt I would ask for the assistance of an electrician who can determine exactly the fucntion of the switch and whether it can be turned off once the fire has ignited.
Hi maggie. Try this link

or if you know the make & model of your gas fire google it for a free download of the manual.

We had a switch on the wall in our previous house, it was connected to the ignition. You still had to press a button to ignite the flame, as jd_ 1984 said, but that wouldn't work unless that electrical switch was on. We just left it on all the time.

I think it is air It packed up again earlier today but it is back on now.
I was married to a gas engineer so I remember some of the things he talked about.
I will get the chap to look at it when he comes to fix the new boiler this week

I have always lit the fire without the switch on the wall as I don't have a manual and had no idea it had anything to do with the fire untill I went on the internet
Well, you've lost me a bit there maggie. What did it say on the Internet to make you think the switch is connected to the fire?
I have got a switch on mine which turns on a light so that it looks cheerful when not lit. Makes it look as if the coals are glowing.
