Wow - a question just for me.
I assume this relates to my previous response. There's no need to create a new post- you can just post a reply to your own post.
Anyway, sorry I can't yet add to my previous answer as I don't understand the question / its context. Is it homework- primary/secondary? is it a riddle?

It's homework. The heading is - Inverse Checking. Use Inverse operations to check results.
Work out the following calculations using inverse operations:
35+89=124. Inverse calculation is = answer
3.2+3.3=6.5. Inverse calculation is = answer
142+145=287. Inverse calculation is = answer

And so on.
am I missing something here?

Surely 35+89=124. Inverse calculation is = 124-89=35
Yes chuck- that's what I put on my other posting in larap's other thread but larap came back and asked me again so I assume wasn't happy with the answer
Haha Factor30, I bet Larap saw your response here http://tinyurl.com/y8lecfs and thought you are brilliant. So... here's another one for you :-)

Is it that simple ChuckFickens? I was thinking it was more complicated than that.

Thank you.
I think some context to the level of the homework is needed here.

If it's primary school then it probably is that simple, if it's degree level then it's probably a little more complicated.

Primary school ChuckFickens. Thanx
Subtraction is generally regarded as being a bit harder than addition. You might forget to carry '10' from one column to the next, but, apart from that, addition is pretty straightforward. But subtraction is tricky when you have to 'borrow 10' then 'pay it back'. So checking your answer to a subtraction sum by adding your answer to the line above (the subtrahend) and seeing that you get the top line (the minuend) can be a good accuracy check. I would say that the check is an inverse answer to the problem, though I have never heard of the term.
