Concrete floors

What would cause a concrete floor in a bungalow to bulge and crack.

Hi Sigma....has the floor risen............or, have the walls subsided?

The floor has risen, it bulges across the centre of the floor.
I'm assuming that the way to overcome it is to have the floor relayed.

..........Sig, it all depends on what kind of floor it is. It might be concrete base with a sand and cement "screed" on top (about 2inches/50mm thick). Sometimes the screed lifts for various reasons - if so, you might get away with removing the damaged area and patching with new.
If the whole thickness of the floor has lifted - then it could be along the lines of what Cleversod talked about - or possibly clay "heave" where the clay has swollen with all this wet weather.
Whichever - you have to be there to tell :o)

As The Builder says, sometimes a bulge is due to the failure of the screed laid on top of the floor. My next door neighbour had a similar problem - she was convinced that the roots from a tree outside had come into her house and had caused the floor to rise up in places. When I lifted the carpet, I discovered that it was just that the screed had cracked and disintegrated in areas of heavy wear and tear.

If you lift your carpets, can you take a picture of the *naked* floor (put it on something like photobucket) and give us a link to it.
