Damage done by bathroom fitters

Is it reasonable to expect a certain level of damage to my property by the tradesmen fitting a new bathroom? The sliders for the Ramsey ladder into the loft were split which means that the bottom section of the ladder is no longer secure. A fitter returned to the house and bent them back, but they are still split.
The garage was used as a workroom and there are now digs in the concrete floor. I am still holding back 1,000.00 pending final snagging on other bits and pieces - should I expect compensation for the damage or is it 'fair wear and tear'?

No it is not reasonable to expect ANY level of damage to your property, if they do not do all repairs to your satisfaction, get some estimates from other builders to rectify faults and pay the bill with the money you are holding back and give the company that did original work the balance, this sort of thing annoys me so much, and gets all of us in the building trade a bad name, no excuse for it it is shoddy and wrong, don't let them get away with it, Ray

Thank you Ray. I am very heartened to read your obvious indignation. I now know what approach I should take with the company concerned. The Ramsey ladder was obviously subjected to undue force and the garage floor was lack of protection before they started working. Again, thanks for your input.
I hope they do get it sorted for you, it really does annoy me, when people go into houses and treat the property without the respect it deserves, it is wrong, it is unprofessional and it gets us all a bad name, if you aren't happy with what they do, contact the owner or director of the company and ask him if he would be happy to have this done to his house, I would suggest you take photos of the damage they have done, they have already admitted they did, by returning and attempting to mend the ladder, hope you get it sorted to your satisfaction, good luck, Ray
i would say digs in the concrete garage floor, unless they're huge potholes, are almost fair wear and tear, as it was used as a workroom. it is after all just a garage.
the loft ladder i would agree with you about. they don't come cheap and it needs repairing properly.
we have, over the years, had many extensions and alterations done to our house, including 2 new bathrooms within the last couple of years, and seen a variety of tradesmen. in my opinion, there are things worth complaining about and others which are part and parcel of having work done.

I am grateful to you both Ray and Ethandron (thanks for the reminder of Jimmy Edwards!). I will certainly press my case for the loft ladder. While I am still holding some of the money I think that I will have their attention.
you must be of a certain age, not many get the reference (actually my late mum and dad's real names too). good luck.
