Any novel ways to fill small gaps between arnished floorboards and skirting boards (and also around the radiators?!). Someone mentioned some sort of corking??

I think you mean caulking. You can get it at B&Q or Homebase etc. Whether you will be able to get a colour that will blend in with your already varnished floorboards I dont know. It usually comes in a tube similar to silicone sealants.
I have just had an idea. Have you not thought of using wooden beading around the bottom of your skirting boards. You could stain them the same colour.
Sorry this post is in bits. I had a late night and my brain is just starting to function. The product you are looking for is called Decorators Caulk. I know you can paint over it, but i dont know about stain. Hope this helps.
I have just completed a similar project and decided to use wood quadrant to finish the job. A bit time consuming cutting all the angles but looks great and not too expensive (obviously depending on the size of your room). Gives a far more professional finish than caulk.

It depends how big your gap is - up to about 5mm I'd use caulking. More than that then maybe quadrant, which starts in size from 6mm and it perhaps fiddly to fit.
