At least 16
Brightspark is right but most shops will take back unopened packs, so I'd buy an extra one because you will almost certainly have small pieces of waste that you can't use and that will mess up the estimated amount needed.
If you are very lucky with wastage, then 16 might just do it ... but 17 (or even 18 to allow for pattern/shade matching) is more realistic.

Good grief
It was £80 per pack reduced to £30 and we estimated 8 because we were unsure of the dimensions of the room
Good job we didn't buy it
My calculators broke, but I would have bought you a little rug to cover the gap - sorry.

Sorry I forgot to add thank you for the answers
That would have been Black Friday for you Ric.ror if you had bought it.
To give a definitive answer, we need to know the actual sizes of each piece of flooring. To say it covers 1.008 m2 is not enough, as already said, you need to consider the waste, so better to buy more packs.
The area of the floor is 3.5 x 4.5 = 15.75 m2
Divide this by 1.008 gives 15.625 packs.
I'd get 17 packs, as you can take unopened ones back like bhg481 says :)
Easy to work out >3.5 x 4.5 = 15.75. So 16m sq. As the pack does 1 sq meter you need 16 packs minimum, but as said buy 17 to allow for waste as you will need extra.
If you are not confident of your maths it is helpful sometimes to sketch these things out, ideally on squared paper. You can use a scale of 1cm = 1m. I'd treat the packs as covering 1m² rather than 1.008 m².
The answer also depends on how small the pieces are in the packs and the pattern as this affects the extent to which you can use part-packs, I'd buy 20 as the worst case and hope to be able to return three
I think Ric Ror may have to rob a bank first.

Well as it was reduced and would work out approx £500 which is - I guess - the price of a good carpet - I thought it would be ok
I would not know where to get any solid oak flooring any cheaper from

Any ideas?

Ps Mama - I intend to get lucky on the premium bonds tomorrow
That is about as cheap as real wood flooring gets but it should last a lifetime once it is laid correctly. How long would a 'good' carpet last?
You can get 'laminate' that looks like wood cheaper, the real thing costs a lot but you get what you pay for.
Solid wood flooring for £30 a square meter....I'd bite their hand off !!
Cheap wood flooring will be a softer wood than Oak and will not last as long . Oak is the best, remember it was used to make battleships for centuries as the song says>
''Hearts of Oak are our Ships'' The best costs the most as allways.
Ric not putting you of at all because as others have said, solid engineered hardword laid correctly will last a lifetime if looked after, but you need factor in other costs as well as just flooring, e.g glue, new skirtings or quadrant to cover expansion gaps, underlay etc, it also depends on weather you are laying it on concrete or wooden floor. Are you planning on laying it yourself?
Question Author
Tony - are you kidding - I can't lay anything like that
My son will probably do it - he's a joiner but not currently working with wood
He makes plastic signs

Another subject - where is the best place to source internal doors?
Any of the usual suspects, Ric ......... Homebase, Wickes etc

Question Author
Builder - are wickes etc considered good value though or would a local supplier be better
