Dents in carpet

I've read that ice cubes will remove dents in carpets. Should I put them in plastic bags or let them melt on the carpet - this seems a bit messy.

let them melt... or fill a sprayer with warm water and fabric conditioner and spray the dents the conditioner helps plump up the fibres
