We have a number of trees on our drive which some branches over hang on to next doors property do we need to ask them permission to cut our own trees?

no but you do have to ask permission to go on to their land to do it, and anyway its a good idea to talk to them about your intentions...and of course to clear up properly afterwards
also, they can cut down anything that overhangs their garden, but they have to give you back the cuttings!!
No but you may need planning permission if you live a conservation area or have protected trees.
