in part sunshine, hardy, evergreen (or keeps leaves of any colour!)
I am trying to find something tall to put in a container which is going over a manhole cover (which is why I need a pot) but would be useful as a little screen from my window and the road.
I am pretty useless and would like something which needs little attention,
Any ideas?

Eucalyptus is a lovely evergreen and its slightly scented, can get pretty bushy tho, lovely shade of aqua green leaves. There are loads of options tho, will have a looky for you but the Eucalyptus will grow fairly quickly.
a nice minature fruit tree???

Thanks, but the eucalyptus grows to 40 ft!! Or would having it in a pot minimize it? I think fruit trees require attention, I really want something not too bushy or it will go out onto the pavement and I will be forever pruning it.
Thanks for the link,I'll work my way through it.
fruit trees dont require that much attention especially the minature variety just a case of picking up the leaves in the autumn and pruneing once a year
Containerising the tree will stunt its growth a bit but there are loads of shorter varieties of Eucalyptus. You'll have to look at a few (eg the link) and see what would suit.
Would need a warmish climate for a fruit tree and not sure if all arent deciduous.

still haven't found anything, maybe a conifer of some kind?
Three ideas.

1.Viburnum opulus---the snowball bush

2. Japanese Maple --Acer Palmatum --Orange Dream,

3 Mimosa Acacia.

All will grow in a large pot , will need feeding from time to to and plenty of water , if and when we get a hot summer.

Can all be found on the internet.

Good luck..
Sorry , time to time.
Japanese Maples are my personal fave but theyre not evergreen
you can grow an eucalyptus in a pot just keep it trimmed also trimmimg them keeps the leaves round instead of long and oval
And be aware . . . you may need to get to the manhole cover one day!

Thanks Brenda but two of those are deciduous and I need to screen and the other is way to big and bushy. As A.Guest says, I may need to move it one day which is why I need something quite light ,not too bushy and under 8ft tall.
