I have a purple Acer in a tub that is beautiful but it keeps wilting and the leaves appear to burn and shrivel up. Anybody any clues as to why? Would it be better planted in the garden?

The usual reason for leaf burn is wind. It will be quite happy in the pot, just make sure that you place it in a sheltered position

Yes to cjaoh, I have a lovely Acer in a pot facing South and about 5ft high
The wind answer is spot on, but more so if you are anywhere near the sea and getting on-shore wind. It's a bit of a bore, but protect it with fleece if stronger on-shore winds are expected, then remove fleece and wash afterwards. Otherwise keep out of the wind even to taking indoors in worst scenario.
