Dead head after flowering and prune back to the first bud.
you don't need to prune them at all unless they are too big for the place they are growing in. If you do want to reduce the size then do it immediately after flowering to allow for buds to develope in August. Even so expect a reduced display the following year.

Once they are well established and get big, they can stand quite severe pruning provided it is done early in the year
