I have a number of large white lily plants all of which
have had their leaves eaten. I recently spotted a red
beetle-like insect on most of the plants, about the size
of a ladybird. could this be the culprit, and if so what is
it , and what is the remedy.

Yes denfol, I think this would be the culprit, it's the 'Lily Beetle. Unfortunately it is dificult to get rid of, probably the best method of control is to pick them off when you see them and squash them. All the Best. Tbird+
Its the Lily beetle grubs that do the damage. They encase them selves in their own excrement (Yuk) while they are munching your plants. Blast them way with a hose pipe!!
