We are looking for a low maintenance houseplant which will grow to a maimum of one metre. It is going to be placed in the hallway beside the front door so is has to tolerate draughts.

Any ideas please??

I can't honestly think any indoor plant is capable of thriving in draughts (the leaves risk falling off) especially next to an outside door where the temperature will up and drop all the time; mind you I may be wrong! Why not try dried flowers for some display and no maintenance.
One plant that might stand half a chance is the good old aspidestra, nick named the cast iron plant. It's the much-maligned symbol of the victorian age and is as tough as old boots, the size would be about right and it seems to thrive on neglect, it's main enemy being strong sunlight that can scorch the leaves.
The variegated form is much brighter than the plain green if you can find one. (Aspidestra elatior variegata)

Thank you for your replies. We are looking into both suggestions.

While looking into your idea of an aspidestra Tbird. I came across a site about "The biggest aspedetria in the world" A song once sung by Gracie Fields (long before your time). My father had that on a 78 vinyl.

I had forgotton all about it up until now. Even if we don't get an aspidetra thanks for your reply which led to a few lost pleasant memories.

I may even get around to learn how to spell ASPIDISTRA one day, I had enough tries!
