I have a small border around my front open plan lawn which the local cat population appear to think is their own private toilet. I am absolutely fed up clearing away their mess and am looking to find an effective remedy for this I would be most grateful for any ideas that others have employed which have proven effective and any that have not.

The best way to deter visiting cats is to get your own cat! It will then scare off the visitors, while using your neighbours' gardens for its own toilet purposes ;-)

Alternatively, see what the RHS has to say on the matter:

My neighbor had the same prob a month ago, even though he had a cat.

I suggested to him to buy the black plastic cats that you just stick in the ground. They have an evil eye that follows the cats. He bought 3 from amazon or ebay, they are about £3 each.

It worked straight away, but the problem is they have been using my front borders, so I will have to buy some now!
What deters one cat, another will treat with disdain.
Most of the recommended treatments seem to be wishful thinking in my experience.
Have had some success with camphor. They don't seem to like the smell or something. But like most of that type of deterrent, it needs regular replacing.
As I have previously posted. Try white pepper - liberally sprinkled around. Have to renew every time it rains though. Works/worked for me.
I have a wheelbarrow which I put the grass cutting before taking them to local dump .While the cutting are in the barrow there is a cat which sleeps in it .the understand is if he don't foul up the lawn he can lie there but if he /she breaks the rules then the barrow goes back in the shed. So come to some agreeable arrangement with the moggy and all will be fine .I fine the them a most agreeable animal .
Wouldn't recommend those electronic cat scaring devices, they had not affect on mine.

When I had the same problem I cut chicken wire out and put it over the ground between the plants. Cats hated it as they couldn't dig and didn't seem to like standing on it, worked a treat.
Don't believe the hype, nothing legal works.
Perhaps yours weren't set to a high enough voltage IggyB ?
