Ryobi Rlt5030S Easy Edge Electric Line Trimmer

Does anyone have any hints on the best way to use the edging facility of the above. We have studied the manual (all pictures - no words). We either get ridges in the lawn from the line an inch or so rom the edge or if we move the trimmer over the other way it does not cut the grass.

Is it just a matter of getting ones eye in so to speak?

Our old B&D had a guide that you put between the lawn and the path.

Any hints would be greatly appreciated.
