My compost Has loads of shiny brown creatures about 1" long with about eight or ten legs which zoom along at some speed (which is why I can't count the legs).
Are they a problem, or should I let them carry on running round? As you can gather I don't know what they're called

Just a lickle centipede

Not nice - get rid of them.
They are good guys in the garden as they are insect predators. they don't eat vegetation.
Agree with Trishy. Centipedes are entirely carnivorous. and live on whatever small creatures they can catch. They don't eat any vegetable matter whether living or decayed. They live in the soil and leaf litter. They are not pests.
