clematis montana rubens

leaves mostly brown , should have flowered about 6 weeks ago, no green leaves yet ,but struggling to flower,(flowers quite poor) anyone got advice as to what,s happened?

Mine are poor this year too. I think it may well be due to the very warm March followed by extremely wet April and then very cold May.

feed for green growth this year nitrogen rich feed until about end of july then leave the stems to ripen... BTW they are flowering like crazy in the midlands
