i live in a terraced property, my neighbour has said we do not have access to our rear garden via her garden even though there is a gate between our properties, is she right?

you will need to check the deeds for your property as these will state your access rights if there are any. If you dont have a copy you can get them from the land registry.
A gate doesn't automatically mean right of access. There's a gate from our garden to our neighbour's, but only because we're friends and it's easier than going all the way round the front and traipsing through each other's house.
