Damp smell.....is it serious?

In our house, we have a very strong damp like smell downstairs directly underneath the bathroom, and the same smell but not as strong in the bathroom itself. We did in the past have a minor leak which caused a little damp but that was probably 18 months ago now and we didn't have this smell at the time. Having children, the bathroom floor did get wet from time to time aswell.

We've taken up the carpet and underlay and binned it, but the smell won't go away.

Is there anyway of finding out what exactly the smell is and how to get rid of it? The concern we have is it may be somthing serious like if the floor boards got wet there may be rotting wood somewhere or something.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

sounds like the timbers got and are still wet, lifting a board is the only real way to be sure.

Thanks Ian, but what should I be looking for? If you're right and timber is wet, what do I do then?
