Washing Machine Water Temperature

Any clues why the water temperature in our washing machine seems to have become hotter than it should, i.e. the woollens are coming out shrunk, presumably because the water is too hot.

A faulty control module or thermostat.
Has to be the thermostat doesn't it. That's what measures the water temperature and consequently controls it.
Unless something is not using the information it supplies to keep the temperature right. Whatever it is, it's a call out job I suspect.
