cost of living in 1938

Can anyone tell me the price of a loaf of bread, pint of milk etc in 1938. Also price of an average house and car. Thanks in advance.

Thankyou but our library is closed at the moment for a refit.
I can't give you an exact price for milk and bread, but a tin of Heinz soup in 1938 was 5d or 7d and Spry all purpose cooking fact was 10d for a 1lb tin. A Popular Ford car was �115 for a saloon or �125 for a Double-Entrance saloon (whatever that was) plus �6 tax.

This all comes from a marvelous book entitled 'Ragtime to Wartime' The Best of Good Housekeeping 1922 - 1939
ISBN 0 85223 584 4. It is the first of an entire series going right up to the 60s, covering Christmas and 'tips' passed on from mother to daughter and they're some of the best research books I have!
