Try the Introducing X Series of books (previously called X for Beginners) published by Icon books & available from most good book stores. They present loads of hard facts and info in and easily digestible form and use nice big pictures to get points across when it's needed...very accessable.

Use this link to buy direct from the publisher! http://www.iconbooks.co.uk/intro.cfm

Icons are good. For a readable biography of the life of the man, Francis Wheen's Karl Marx was very well-received; get more political/ revolutionary with The Revolutionary Ideas of Karl Marx by Alex Callinicos of the SWP.
