....... I'm afraid that kempie's wikipedia article is a long way from complete. For instance the collar of the gentleman of the wood carving here at http://tinyurl.com/mam9z is wired lace and is called a rabato. Rabato's were quite common. There are quite a number of other types. ...........
Rabato is another term for supportasse or underpropper, the wiring used to support the ruff, a ruffled collar of which there are a number of types.
Not so, but I shall not debate the matter with you.
don't know the name but they used bluebell bulbs to stiffen them, which now would be illegal and stupid as the bulbs are poisonous
This may be of help

Ruffs developed for several reasons. Lace, time-consuming to make and very costly, was a status symbol for the rich. The more lace you could display, the more you proclaimed your status.

Rebato, Rabato:

Rabat - a Rebatoe for a womans ruffs, also a falling bank. (Cotgrave, 1611)

In Prussia I observed them to weare long ruffes, with rebatoes of wire to beare them up, such as our women use. (Morysons Ininerary, 1605-17)
I asked my dog what was the name of the frilly neck collar worn by both sexes in 16/17th century and he said 'ruff'.
