When did the tradition of 'Bonfire Night' start? Was it suspended during WW2?

I think it started the year after the plot, which would be 1606. In the earliest traditions, people burnt an effigy of the Pope and not Guy Fawkes.
I wasn't around in WW2 but it could not have been allowed, it would have told the German air crews where to bomb.
