Can anyone answer how many perished in the Great Fire of London? No cheating and looking it up. I am surprised at the answer.

Change of dynasty would be right for three of them, but not all four.
in that case, I don't know, even though I am now comparatively wide awake.
The clue is in the names of the monarchs who died in those years
jourdain - //Don't quite understand you Islay. Anyway, I'm in the middle of making salad and weighing out dog-food right now, so can't worry about it. //

Interesting - are you bored with chicken / ham / corned beef / mackerel, that sort of thing?
I didn't realise this was still going - goody!

Were they the years of the deaths of reigning queens? Victoria, Anne, Elizabeth etc..?
Right on the first two.
...not necessarily queens.
OK, we have Stephen and King John. Now going to rack my brains for the connection. You don't set questions for 'Only Connect' do you Jackdaw? Perhaps I'll feel brighter after my weekly dose tonight.
You're on the right track. Now, what distinguishes these four from all the others?
None of them inherited directly from a parent? But that applies to others. Were they out of the direct line? Victoria from an uncle, Anne from a sister, John from a brother.... not sure about Stephen, was he a nephew?
Think names/styles/titles. These four lack something.
On the lines of 'Good Queen Anne', 'Bad King John' do you mean? Come on other ferreters give me a hand here!
What does not follow the names of these four which follows the names of all other monarchs?
A number! Goodness, Jackdaw, I do feel thick! :)
Hurray! However, as I have had to spoonfeed you I can't award a cigar, but you can have a Woodbine instead.
no numerals ?
deaths of Stephen John Anne and Victoria

first three werent succeeded by their heirs ....
What about all the others who gave up? Seriously, that would make a great question for 'Only Connect' - why not submit it?

I don't call it spoonfeeding - I found connections, just not the right one. Well done, Jackdaw. :)
No regnal number. John was succeeded by his heir, Henry III.
wasn t Prince Arthur of Brittany cruelly done to death ?

It was such a long time ago and I wasnt there
If I had given the dates of accession, i.e. 1135, 1199, 1702 and 1837 it might have become more obvious.
