Why would he do that, as he surely needed the goodwill of the Athens people before he sailed to war?

That is they were not too worried about the good will bit ?

I dont think they destroyed them - if you look at a Herm, (in a museum that is) they knocked off the well, you know, Cardinal O'Brien bit.
