Charles Andrews + Smith or Ward-Smith
1) I am researching into Charles Andrews my great (x3) grandfather; he was born in 1815 in Chipping Norton. The IGI states his parent’s names, Richard Andrews and Susannah. There is a pedigree resource file on family search for a Richard Andrews (1794 Williamscott) and Ann Poulton (1797 Charlecote). I think that they are Charles’ respective parents as I can’t find anyone else that I think would be his parents. There is only one other Richard and Susannah Andrews I have found and they lived in Kent. The 1861 census states Richard Andrews and Ann Andrews as living in Oxfordshire but I haven’t found them on the 1841 or 1851 censuses. Now, I would think that they are the parents but their marriage was in 1822 and I have found 4 daughters born after this date but Charles Andrews was born in 1815. I would think that Charles Andrews would not be born 7 years before his parent’s marriage and 10 years before his sisters but I couldn’t say, maybe there were some other circumstances that I haven’t found out about yet.
2) My grandmother’s name at birth appears to be Brenda Trugard Smith born in 1913 in Brighton and her brother Arthur Trugard Ward Smith born in 1914 in Lincolnshire. On the birth listings it states both their surnames as Smith. But I have had assurances from relatives that the name is Ward-Smith. The birth listings imply that Arthur’s middle name is ward. I have been shown Arthur’s marriage certificate which states Arthur Trugard Ward-Smith, (Ward-Smith being the surname whereas Ward was a middle name on the birth listings) Arthur and Brenda’s father Edwin is listed on the 1911 census as Edwin Ward Smith with Ward being a middle name and his marriage is also listed as Edwin W Smith with W as the middle name. It appears that my Grandmother is always Smith up to marriage as the marriage listings state Brenda T Smith.

I know this seems quite obscure but would there be any obvious reason why the name would be changed as two phrase surnames were quite rare in the past so I am presuming that it was initially Smith and then changed to Ward Smith from Arthur's middle name.

Ward was a middle name if the surname in the birth cert in the surname column was smith.
As for the first query, the IGI coverage may not have included the parish that your ancestor was baptised in, go to Phil;imores atlasd and index at your local ref library and check if the parish your ancestors lived in was included in the IGI. people tend to think the IGi is the B all and end all but some Bishops refused to let the mormons film thier registers hence a gap. you should really try to use the CRO to look at the Bishop's transcripts or the original PR
check the Gibson guide to parish regisyers to see whether they are filmed from the primary sopurce or indexed

Hi there, contact Lincolnshire Archives in Lincoln http://www.lincolnshi...ype=topic&catid=22003 they have comprehensive details of all baptisml records for the County, and do searches on your behlf if you are unable to get there yourself.
