Im pretty sure its Maria Callas and I know there is a soundtrack available because I used to have it, have you tried looking for it on-line?
I could have sworn it was from Madame Butterfly but wait to be corrected.

It is Maria Callas. The aria is called "La Mamma Morta" from an opera called ' Andrea Chenier' by Giordano.

I know absolutely nothing about opera, but this is on a CD I have and and it says 'this aria is featured in the film 'Philadelphia'

Cetti is correct (as usual!!). It is, indeed, Maria Callas performing La Mamma Morta. And there is a CD soundtrack available, titled Philadelphia - Music from the Motion Picture. I got it not so long ago from HMV at the knock-down price of 4.99!
Sorry comloulou, you were correct too!! :-)
