Old Birth Certificate

I've just started tracing my family tree and would like to order a birth certificate but its expensive ordering it through Ancestry! It is much cheaper through GRO but can anyone tell me how I can find the GRO Index Reference Number for the birth!

You'll get the reference from here.
if you have used ancestry the reference is on the screen under the entry anyway. you are looking for a number then letter and then 2 or 3 numbers after that. for instance 8a 810, also the name of the district and the year and quarter.
then order via here:
