What do I need to look for?

I've just found out I can go to my local community centre and use the computers there to do my family tree for free but I'm not sure what information I should be looking for.
Starting with a name and their date of birth, date of marriage and date of death i.e BMD what else should I be looking for please?

I don't think he was married twice.

William died in Onchan in 1957
Elizabeth Harriet died in Douglas in 1952.

They had Bertha in 1899, William Arthur in 1901 and then one more child who they lost and then Joseph in 1910, that's still going to give a large gap between births one way or another. Did Elizabeth perhaps die immediately after the 1911?

Wow you guys have been really busy, I can't explain how grateful I am to you for finding this information for me.
Perhaps he was only married once to Elizabeth although we knew her as Aunt Fanny.
I will phone my Aunty with this information tomorrow to see if it jogs her memory.

To dotty and craft, I've now written down everything you have told me and it seems that William married Elizabeth in 1898.
Their daughter Bertha was born 1899
Their son William jnr ( Uncle Bill) was born 1901.
They then had another child who died.
Then their son Joseph was born 1910.
If Elizabeth died in 1952 as you have said craft then I would have been 6yrs old so the person I knew as Aunt Fanny wasn't actually Williams wife as I was about 9yrs old when I met her so old Uncle Bill must have been living over the brush :-)
You have really put me in the mood now for learning more.
