animal crossing ds lite wifi setup - help me?!

I've just got animal crossiing wild world for the ds and am trying to connect to wifi.
on the menu i choose 'other things' then' wifi settings' then choose 'start' and the screen goes black!

help! am i doing anything wrong or is my ds/game broken?!
