The "Xbox 360 Controller for Windows" can be used on both a 360 and a Windows PC however the standard Xbox controller supplied with an Xbox cannot be used.

aaahhh ok cheers for that that explains why my laptop wont regognise it for use but accepts the software cheers

You can use the wired 360 controller on a pc - I've got mine working on a Vista PC...
