Champ Manager question...

I'm trying to get the 97/98 version of CM2 to run on my laptop, and it's running...but the screen is really screwed-up. All the colours are ok and I can make out where the boxes are on the screen, but it's really distorted and isn't playable. I've tried adjusting my screen resolution and compatibility settings, but because the game runs in the command screen (i.e. what was Dos) I don't know whether it's making any difference. I've got Grand Theft Auto I to run fine and that's got more demanding graphics and was brought out the same year as CM2 .

Anybody got any idea why it's messed up?
Any ideas of if it can be corrected?
