Disoriented or Disorientated

Disoriented or Disorientated, The other day I used "disorientated" my OH smiled, I knew what I had said but also sure I had heard it before, then a few days later I heard it in use on the TV. is there a difference.

Is it an American/English thing.

Pinky, we have 3, they love to play with small dogs and they do appreciate the size of smaller dogs and are very gentle around them.
