You can buy vegetable suet which is suitable for vegetarians, I used to buy mine in Morissons, but haven't bought it for a while, so not sure if it's still around, but I can't see why it shouldn't be.
I've bought and used vegetable suet (Atora). Most supermarkets sell it.
we bought some in asda last year to make the christmas puds.

thanks for that. Problem is, I live in Greece. Just about get beef suet in Athens. No chance of getting vegetarian suet out here in the far South West.

Thanks for all your efforts
Why not just use butter instead ? Soak your dried fruit in some liqueur (rum or brandy for example or even beer), add some brown sugar, lemon and orange juice (from freshly squeezed fruit), nutmeg, mixed spice and candied peel as well some very cold thin slivers of butter - this needs to be done in advance to give the fruit time to absorb all the flavours. Here's a link to one of Delia's recipes (huge quantities mind, which may need to be scaled down), just substitute butter for the lard.... you will need to scroll down to find *mincemeat*....http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A663626
I lived in Africa for years and couldn't get suet so started by replacing it with grated margerine; but now I just leave it out completely and replace the given quantity with more fruit or nuts. I still leave out the suet though I can get it easily where I live now.
