Is it true that making a pinprick in an egg stops it cracking when you boil it?

It does, but you have to really careful making the pinprick in the less-curved end of the egg. If you want perfect soft-boiled eggs, try putting the eggs in cold water, bring it to the boil, and time them for two minutes from the time the water boils fiercely. You will achieve uncracked soft-boiled eggs.
Does this help: my mother used to put a pinch of salt in the water to stop the egg cracking.
several years ago i bought an egg pricker in divertimenti, a shop in wigmore st. Wl and guess what? IT WORKED
