I'm thinking of buying a blender for making smoothies. Is it OK to crush ice in a blender with a plastic jug, or will I be better off with a (more expensive) glass one? Many thanks!

blenders don't really crush ice very well in my experience. I don't think a plastic or glass container will make much difference. I would suggest putting the ice in a plastic bag and hitting it a few times with a rolling pin to crack it into smaller pieces, THEN putting it in the blender for the best results.
i have a kenwood smoothie maker, which is made of glass, it was about 35 and it crushes ice well.
The issue is not glass or plastic but the quality of the motor - the higher the wattage the better really. As a rule the better quality blenders will have glass jugs anyway. As long at the blender has an "Ice" setting where the blades pulse then you should be fine.
