Yes. I do it every year. Yesterday I made a large vat of apple, plum and blackberry compote from home-grown fruit. Delicious and will still taste as good in a few months time.
Best done if the fruit is a bit under-ripe as it will mush a bit more when defrosted. If under ripe it will stay a bit firmer...

Sugar in the stewed fruit will also retain some of the quality as it helps keep the flavour as well as colour and texture too.

Defrost slowly at room temp before using to get the best results too.
