I am looking to lose a few lbs without having to spend a fortune at a gym, so I have decided to give jogging (another) bash.

The problem is, the last time I tried it, I got shooting pains in my shins. Is this normal? Is it my trainers or am I just jogging strangely??

TIA :0)

shin splints - ouch
I have never had these until.......
I got a treadmill at home and my left shin suffered really badly,
apparently its from not streching before and after workout, but also the hardness of the treadmill.
The best thing to do is rest but then this isnt really what we want to do.
So good luck be interested to hear other ppls views too.
I get this too, I sometimes get it if I walk too fast too.
In the end I used to always cycle everywhere.

You muct make sure you have propper running shoes, the more thicker the soul the better to absorb the impact of your feet on the ground.

Also you can't just go and jog straight away, you will need to warm up first by taking a stroll around for a while first or something.
Same here - I cancelled my gym membership and took up jogging. It sounds like it may be the trainers. Visit a local running shop (ie. staffed by runners who know what they are talking about) and get yourself properly fitted with shoes that suit your style,. My local shop did an analysis of my running style and found me some shoes with extra cushioning (for the excess weight!) but with motion control built in. I started off slowly jogging/walking in February .. am now doing 4 miles in 40 mins .. and no shin splints or other injuries. :o)
Better to take up cycling. Less strain on your muscles or joints.

Thanks everyone!

Sunflower, hope you got some good tips here :0)

Cockney_si, wottonmel and pcwork - Thanks, I'm going to pay a visit to a running shop over the weekend and make sure I get help choosing the correct trainers. I'm also going to start off by walking (faster than normal) and build up to jogging. Hopefully I will get to where you are in a few months too, wottonmel!

kwicky - I have nowhere to store a bike hence my decision to jog, but thank you anyway.
