Hard icing

As usual I will be making my own Christmas cake but as yet have never been able to get the icing to set hard. Can anyone tell me the secret please.

Could be your recipe was for the soft set icing, not the Royal...
Yes, you need royal icing if you want it to set hard.
Best of luck making Royal Icing - which is what you need for hard icing.

Helpful tip: don't leave it until December to look for glycerine in the shops...
newbie - Silver spoon do an all in one royal icing sugar, you just add the water ( already has dried egg added )
You add lemon juice to it - don't be tempted to do the icing too soon tho as i did for a wedding cake once - it was too hard to cut thru it, even with an electric knife!!!!
