I always thought it was something Paul Mccartney made up for a song on the Ram album.

It's a Lancashire version of meat and potato pie, but without meat, that used to only be available on Fridays (stemming from Catholics not eating meat on Fridays). Now they are available every day and are wonderful, a childhood favourite.
