It seems that my dog has a thing for plastic!

Woof (19mths), is a true mongrel yet hansom enough for several stranger's to ask me which breed he is! Yet as loyal and obedient as he is and as however many chews and toys i give him, he seems to have a fetish for plastic perticularly wires ever since he was a pup and he was born here at home. What striked me as weird was when i'de bought some ear phones for my mp3 player.....still in packaging, ide left them in the bread bin in the kitchen......4hrs later i came home and the 'plastic' packaging was on the floor opened neatly and the ear phones in his bed totally chewed??? he's chewed threw 10 internet cable's that have been pinned to the skirting board's, and destroyed 3 hair dryers and a pair of straighteners. I buy him a variety of toy's and chew's each week but he alway's seems to find a wire or some sort of plastic be it a bin bag, lunch box ( which he's stole out of my ruck sack), or credit card's he's took out of my wallet! Can you give me a reason as to why he searches for anything plastic please? Thanks Chell x

I have no answer for you but I shall be watching for any replies as my mutt is the same! It's probably just as simple as dogs are opportunists!

My cousin said it could also be that they can smell us on the things they decide to chew!! So instead of ripping us to shreds they go for things we touch instead, very kind of them!! Bless their little naughty paws!!

My dog, also a mongie, used to do this. I gave him a plastic Ltr bottle (coke bottle) with the top taken off. He would spend hours with this even taking it to bed. Tho he could make hoes in it and rip it to bits in the end he never swallowed any. So you could give this a try.

He's 10 now and still loves his plastic bottles!!!

My dog is the same with stones. Big ones and small ones. Everytime she goes for a walk or just out for a wee, she will bring a stone back in. She has lots of toys and chews but prefers her stone. My worry is that she will swollow one .

Be careful when you leave him alone, my GSD bitch disconnected my clock/radio one day when home alone. She survived - god knows how she was not electrocuted! After that I used to turn the electric off at the mains when I left the house. Inconvenient but better than having a dead dog! It was easier just to flick the switch than try and isolate all the wires to the TV Video etc. I also used to turn the gas off as my dogs lay beside the gas pipe leading to the gas fire and I dreaded coming home to a gas leak if they leaned on the pipe.

It used to amaze me the things she managed to do - one day after living with it for months she attacked a large umbarella plant and we came home to soil all over the room and the plant in bits!
