bednobs, you think i am being picky thats your perogative but to me an asylum has inmates ,a care home has residents.
I'd call them residents...because that is where they live.
But maybe they are inmates because they can't leave of their own accord.
i was in a mental health hospital and i called us inmates because that is what it felt like..
Let’s leave the inmates for prison .
"bednobs, you think i am being picky thats your perogative"
thanks, i know
People have their different ways of coping with things and someone who has cared for a parent so long is allowed some levity.

, inmate had come to mean "one confined to an institution."
just what i was thinking mamy
I doubt Jordy will be reading his book then Emmie.
a lot of care home people are confined to an institution. frailty or infirmity or deprivation of liberty mean they are not free to leave
Jordy, the 'inmates' cropped up in a conversation between friends, and the user has enough experience (and sensitivity) to know which terms are appropriate and when.
A care home is not a prison or mental institution and to my knowledge residents can leave at any time if they or their relatives choose to. Therefore they are residents not inmates. However, Jordy, I feel your friend was more than likely describing the residents as 'Inmates' with his tongue firmly in his cheek, reflecting how he feels about them and his concerns he may end up in one.
exactly Nical, he is a good guy seemingly and has dealt with an almost impossible situation with grace.
ps Jordy, you seem very interested in reading a thread you are always moaning about!
If you're talking about the man I think you're talking about, take a look at the title of his book. That might give you some indication that his terminology was intended to be light-hearted - and why shouldn't it be? He's been in a very difficult situation for a very long time and, in my opinion, has done a marvellous job. All credit to him.
Has to get his material from somewhere Bednobs ;-)
i confess that i would like to read the book..
So who is Jordy referring to then? I thought it was one of his friends.
