Watching the final stage of the Tour today, I love seeing the skyline of Paris, it is a most attractive city ...but what is the rather ugly building which towers over its surrounds and looks like a meccano mad mouse ... I can't believe anyone even contemplated building it.
The Montmartre tower is quite pleasing, though out of character, but this stands out like ..........!!!
I was only half joking. The Eiffel Tower was meant to be dismantled in 1890 but it never happened. Now it's very big business thanks to foreign tourists. Not so the French. The only ones who go there are those that work there or thereabouts. I was told by a native, and this was 20 years ago, that the lift boys were on £30,000 p.a.
It was co-designed by one of Britain's greatest architects, Richard Rogers (a pioneer of 'inside out' architecture), who also designed the fantastic Lloyd's Building in London:
