My OH,while going back (mentally) to his youth, expressed a desire for Mushy Peas. However,Mushy Peas and Marrowfat Peas (in tins at least) seem to be almost the same thing, (this is at Tesco, Sainsbury & Waitrose)

The Batchelor's canned ones have 'mint flavouring' in their 'Marrowfat Bigga Peas' but not in either the 'Traditional' or 'Chip Shop' mushy peas.

Oddly, that's the opposite of what I heard the barman in a Greene King pub tell a customer (in respect of their own menu choices) last Sunday evening. The customer was an overseas visitor who enquired as to the difference between garden peas and mushy peas. He was told that the mushy peas are minted, whereas the garden peas aren't.
You're not allowed to say faggots anymore, it upsets them.
I had faggots a few days ago.

Thank You Buenchico, that puts my mind at rest (I think) people have been telling me (much like Haggis) that faggots are made from all sorts of things.
You're not allowed to say faggots anymore, it upsets them.

Can't think of anything else to call then though.

I had faggots a few days ago.

Good gal, Mamya ( with marrowfat peas I hope ).

Noooooo ( they have gravy on them ), has to be from a proper butchers shop.

Cabbage and mash - sorry.
Question Author
Apologies tonyav, but our nearest real butcher is 16 miles away,so Brains may have to do.
With respect Buenchico,
Your Greene King bar man was making it up.
Processed peas are dried before shipping and slow boiled back to softness with bicarbonated water.
Garden peas are canned, packed fresh after harvesting.
Mamyalynne Cabbage and mash - sorry.

Aw and I thought you must be part Black country gal, Mamya ;-)

,but our nearest real butcher is 16 miles away,

Ah well, Brains it'll have to be then, OldBather.

"Ethel, how's your Bert?"
"Oh, he died suddenly last week. I was cooking dinner and asked him to go down the garden and cut a cabbage. He'd only got half way down when he keeled over with a heart attack. Dead before he hit the ground"

"Ee, Ethel, what did you do?"

"What else could I do? I had to open a tin of peas".
Question Author
Oh yes Jackdaw, the old ones are the best, which means I am suddenly desirable.
>>> Garden peas are canned, packed fresh after harvesting

In a Greene King pub I'd be prepared to bet that they were frozen, not canned!
You don't have to be a connoisseur to tell the difference between frozen and tinned peas.
Back home up north they were called savoury ducks.
Even savoury ducks can look posh if you present them on the plate in a sort of 'nouveau cuisine' style, Caran:

It's nouvelle cuisine, Chico. Get your genders right,
I don't like faggots or savoury ducks, but OH loves them. He takes great pride in buying them from all sorts of salubrious places along with his choice of pork pies, black puddingsa and sausages. He is always trying to smuggle said goods into our already overloaded freezer!
