My OH,while going back (mentally) to his youth, expressed a desire for Mushy Peas. However,Mushy Peas and Marrowfat Peas (in tins at least) seem to be almost the same thing, (this is at Tesco, Sainsbury & Waitrose)

Noooooo two totally different things, OldBather.
Mushy peas are made from marrowfat peas (aka snots).
Question Author
tonyav,
So what is the difference?
They are both processed Peas. As opposed to garden peas.
Mushy are a more distressed, battered about marrowfat pea.
Obvioysly none are as good as black peas with vinegar.
To me marrowfat peas are whole and mushy peas are just that, mushed up.
Question Author
Gromit,
So if I open a tin of marrowfat peas and squash it about a bit,I will get a near comparison to mushy peas?
Question Author
tonyav,So basically the same pea, just mushed up or not mushed up.
Yes.
"black peas with vinegar."
You mean carlings. Memories: carling Sunday, the week before Palm Sunday.
OldBather
More or less yes.

Garden Peas are young, small and fresh.
Processed peas are mature, large and dried for shipping.
When they reach their destination, they are rehydrated, and coloured again.
I've seen mushy peas but they've never appealed - but what on earth are black peas with vinegar? I've never heard of that.
Wikipedia tells you about Black Peas:

Don't you have to do something complicated with baking soda....or was it bicarb?...x
Oh - sat in a striped tent on the fairground eating black peas from a thick pot mug with so vinegar the spoon stood up.

Bliss!
Gromit, thanks. I've learnt something.
