Saffron...more expensive than gold and you let it go out of date?!
Question Author
The Mrs bought it before she met me, so blame her :-)
Naughty Mrs Melv!

I don't have any out of date spices currently. I have a pantry but because I'm messy I have to tidy it on a regular basis meaning I check dates.
saffron can't go off - can it?
I would suspect it'll lose flavour over time.
I could have equalled it a few years ago but I knew about it. When we moved to this house in about 1985, the floor level kitchen cupboard backs didnt reach to the top of the cupboard and there was a gap and a space between the back of the cupboard and the wall. before I realised what had happened, several packet of things like custard and stuffing had managed to slide off the top of the food stored in there and post themselves down the gap. There was nothing to be done short of ripping the cupboard off the was so we hoped that mice didn’t move in and left well alone. Fast forward to 2009 when we had a new kitchen, and the fitters found the stash undamaged and looking like new.
I don't have saffron, but as for past dates, yours is a youngster. Chucked a load of herbs/spices on the compost heap not so long ago when I had a clear out. Most at least three decades old. Presently using up a bag of sugar the same age as your saffron.
I've some stock cubes in the cupboard but they have Roman numerals on them oxo
